Veiled Chameleon Care: Advanced Husbandry in Plain English
Not for Beginners — But Worth It
Veiled chameleons are among the most demanding reptiles in the hobby — sensitive to environmental conditions, stressed by improper setups. Keepers who do the work observe an animal unlike anything else in reptile keeping.
Enclosure: Screen, Not Glass
Glass traps heat and prevents natural evaporation cycles. Use a screen enclosure — at least 24x24x48 inches for an adult veiled. Position away from vents, windows with direct sun, and high-traffic areas.
Temperature and UVB
Basking spot: 85-95°F. Ambient: 65-80°F. UVB: T5 HO 6% or 5.0 tube — absolutely essential. Replace every six months even if it still lights up.
Hydration: Drip System
Chameleons hydrate by drinking droplets off leaves — they will not reliably use a water bowl. Use a drip system running 30-60 minutes morning and evening, supplemented by misting 2-3 times daily. Ensure adequate drainage — standing water breeds bacteria quickly.
Solitary and Stress-Sensitive
Never house two together. Minimize unnecessary handling, limit direct eye contact (they interpret it as a threat).
