The Perfect Mouse Habitat: Tank, Bedding, and Enrichment Basics
Tank vs. Bin Cage
Glass tanks with secure mesh lids are popular for beginners — easy to find, hold warmth well. A 20-gallon long is a workable starting size for two or three females. Bin cages offer significantly more floor space at low cost and are easy to customize.
Deep Bedding: The Core of the Setup
Aim for 4 to 6 inches of paper-based bedding across the full floor. Carefresh, hemp fiber, or paper pulp options all work well. Avoid cedar and pine shavings.
Hides and Nesting Material
Provide at least two or three hideouts. Offer unscented tissue paper or torn toilet paper for nesting material and watch them build elaborate nests within hours.
Wheels and Climbing Enrichment
A solid-surface running wheel is essential. For mice, a wheel with a minimum 6-inch diameter and a solid running surface is the standard. Add cork branches, wooden ladders, or cardboard tubes for climbing. Rotate enrichment items weekly.
